LOS ANGELES (Tue., Aug. 27, 2013) — September is National Preparedness Month and this year’s theme, “You Can Be the Hero” has been fully embraced by the residents and staff living at SEASONS at Compton (15810 S. Fairley Ave., Compton, CA 90021) as they have successfully completed the 20-hour certified U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.

Los Angeles County will officially kick-off its 2013 National Preparedness Month by honoring the residents and staff with certificates of achievement presented by the Office of Los Angeles County Chairman of the Board Mark Ridley-Thomas. In addition, Los Angeles County Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Ertel will present each graduate with their very own CERT backpack and equipment at a special ceremony being held at SEASONS at Compton on Thu., Aug. 29 (10-10:30 a.m.).

Following the conclusion of the special ceremony there will be a disaster preparedness expo featuring invited Los Angeles County Operational Area partner representatives from County Departments, utility companies, and Non-Government Organizations. Each attendee will be provided disaster preparedness materials in different formats and languages.

Preparedness is a shared responsibility as this year’s National Preparedness Month focuses on turning awareness into action by encouraging all individuals and communities nationwide to make an emergency preparedness plan. The residents and staff at SEASONS at Compton are doing just that as they become certified CERT volunteers, providing much needed assistance to their community as well as to the neighbors who live next to the housing complex.
