FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COMPTON, Calif., August 17, 2011 — Today, Congresswoman Laura Richardson (CA-37) and Mercedes Márquez, assistant secretary, community planning and development, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, joined affordable housing leaders to celebrate two new communities that were made possible by federal HOME funds.
During the Welcome HOME Ceremony at SEASONS at Compton, Richardson commented, “For 20 years, the HOME program has helped individuals and families gain access to much needed affordable housing. In Compton and throughout my District, HOME has played an important role in helping those in our community to find housing and improve the quality of life. With our economy still struggling, HOME is more important than ever and I look forward to continuing to support this vital program and the great work of Abode Communities and LINC Housing.”
Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary Márquez, who also shared her perspective on the benefit of HOME funds, said “The population of Los Angeles County continues to grow and the need for affordable housing has never been greater. Today, we have seen Casa Dominguez and SEASONS at Compton, which are perfect examples of how HOME funds can improve the quality of life for seniors who live on a fixed income, the disabled, and low income families. HOME has changed the lives of millions of Americans. As an anchor in the affordable housing finance system, it has produced more than one million affordable homes in the last two decades and delivering value to the taxpayer by leveraging nearly $4 of private and other public investment for every dollar it invests. As we celebrate 20 years of HOME federal funding in Los Angeles County, we look forward to 20 more years of making a difference for those who need it the most.”

The day’s celebration focused on Casa Dominguez (East Rancho Dominquez) and SEASONS at Compton, two new apartment complexes that provide the community with affordable living as well as vital resident and community services. Future resident of SEASONS at Compton, Michael Brooks stated, “I’ll be living on my own for the first time in 57 years. I’m excited about my brand new apartment and meeting my neighbors in September.”
Casa Dominguez opened in 2009 offering 70 homes for low-income families and includes a comprehensive Family Development Center that provides childcare, a health clinic, and a parent resource center for residents and community members. SEASONS began welcoming tenants last month and features 84 apartments for fixed-income seniors and residents with developmental disabilities, who will also receive services coordinated by the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center. Both developments improve resident quality of life while also adding beauty and value to the community at large.
“No matter the political or economic climate, there is no doubt that a basic fundamental of life is the ability to find safe, affordable housing,” said Robin Hughes, President and CEO of Abode Communities. “As nonprofit developers, we depend on multiple sources of funding to make housing possible for our most vulnerable citizens, and appreciate the support we have received from HUD and the HOME program.”
In addition to being affordable communities, both properties have participated in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) for Homes® certification program, the national design and construction standard for sustainable or “green” living. Casa Dominguez, developed by Abode Communities, was the first affordable housing development in Los Angeles County to receive a Platinum rating, the highest rating bestowed by the Council. SEASONS at Compton, developed by LINC Housing, is expected to achieve a most noteworthy LEED for Homes® Gold rating.
“We are pleased that the Congresswoman and Assistant Secretary were able to see these exciting, sustainable properties and meet some of our residents,” said Hunter Johnson, President and CEO of LINC Housing. “The best way to understand the incredible impact of funds for this type of housing can have on the community is to hear from those whose lives are better because of access to a home they can afford.”
