DEVELOPMENT OF MUCH-NEEDED AFFORDABLE
COMMUNITY MOVES FORWARD

$100,000 Grant to Provide Funding for Special Expert to Address Special Needs

COMPTON, Calif., (Oct. 2, 2006) — SEASONS at Compton, an 80-unit affordable rental community that blends limited-income seniors, developmentally disabled adults, and seniors with developmentally disabled adult dependents, has moved a step closer to construction. LINC Housing Corporation (LINC), the developer of this much-needed community, was recently awarded a $100,000 grant to help plan and develop the facilities and services of this new, special-needs model.

To ensure that the community truly meets the needs of its residents, LINC has included on its team a social service expert who has experience in developing facilities and programs for developmentally disabled adults. This project is supported by a grant from the California Community Foundation.

“At LINC, we’re committed to putting together teams that can bring solid solutions to the communities we serve,” said Hunter L. Johnson, president and CEO of LINC. “This grant has allowed us to bring in a true specialist who will not only help us develop the facilities necessary for our special-needs residents, but even more important, we want to ensure that the programs and services we provide enable the residents to live independently and successfully for as long as possible. We’re so grateful to the California Community Foundation for its support of this important work.”

SEASONS at Compton will address the obvious facility needs of the elderly and developmentally disabled including wider doorways and hallways, lower sinks and light switches, and accessibility features such as ramps and elevators.

LINC also plans to bring three areas of services to the community: independent living skills training; supported living; and special services for the senior residents who are caring for their adult children who have developmental disabilities. Because of limited resources in the Los Angeles area for this segment of the population, having these programs as part of LINC’s overall strategy is vital to the community’s success.

“There is a tremendous need for affordable housing for these segments of our community, especially for aging parents who are caring for the developmentally disabled adult children,” said Johnson. “The facilities and services we aim to provide will enhance the quality of life for all of the community’s residents. And we also hope to see friendships form between the various populations creating a cohesive, caring, supportive environment for everyone.”

The five local Regional Centers that facilitate state funding and services for the area’s special-needs community will collaborate with LINC as development progresses. Karen Ingram, director of community services for the Frank D. Lanterman Regional Center points out the importance of this type of development. “People living on supplemental security income receive less than $950 per month, and they rely upon HUD and other subsidized housing to be able to live independently,” she said. “The true value of SEASONS at Compton is that it’s providing desperately needed affordable housing for seniors and people with developmental disabilities.”

If funding and other resources come together as anticipated, construction of SEASONS at Compton is expected to begin in fall 2007. The community will be located at the corner of S. Frailey Avenue and Alondra Boulevard.
